What causes an eating disorder?

The first question that pops into anyone's head when they find out someone close to them has an eating disorder is: why? What happened to cause this? What can I do to stop this?

Thankfully, there are answers to these questions- although they don't always agree with one another. Psychology has many different schools of thought. On this page, I'll go through each one and summarise their ideas; and, armed with this knowledge, you'll be able to better understand what you are, or your friend or loved one is, going through.

The different psychological theories are: psychoanalysis, the feminist approach, the family approach, and neuropsychology.
